FAQs

Common questions about our services and process

What types of furniture do you upholster?

I upholster a wide range of furniture, including armchairs, dining chairs, sofas, footstools, benches, headboards, and occasional pieces. If you're unsure whether your furniture is suitable for reupholstery, you're very welcome to get in touch with photos and approximate dimensions.

Do you reupholster antique or vintage furniture?

Yes — I regularly work with antique and vintage furniture. These pieces often require a more traditional approach, which I'm happy to discuss. I'll always advise honestly on whether a piece is suitable for restoration and reupholstery.

Is it worth reupholstering my furniture?

Reupholstery is often a great option for well-made furniture, sentimental pieces, or designs that are hard to replace. I'm always happy to advise on whether reupholstering your furniture is a good investment for your particular piece.

Do you offer quick turnarounds or urgent work?

Upholstery is a skilled, time-intensive and bespoke process. I don't offer rush work, and commissions are usually booked several weeks in advance. If your project is time-sensitive, please mention this when enquiring so I can advise honestly.

Is upholstery cheaper than buying new?

Not usually. Upholstery is labour-intensive and priced accordingly. Many clients choose bespoke upholstery to preserve quality furniture, reduce waste, or create something unique, rather than as a cheaper alternative to buying new.

What information should I include in my enquiry?

To provide an accurate upholstery quote, please include:

  • Clear photos of the whole piece
  • Close-ups of any damage or wear
  • Approximate dimensions
  • Your location
  • Any deadlines or time considerations

The more information you can share, the smoother the process will be.

Do you repair frames and springs?

Minor repairs are included where needed. More extensive frame or spring repairs will be discussed and quoted separately once the piece has been properly assessed.

Can I get a rough estimate?

I'm happy to offer guidance where possible, but accurate upholstery pricing depends on seeing your furniture. Each piece is different, and all quotes are tailored to the individual project.

Do you accept every project?

I don't — and that's intentional. I take on a limited number of upholstery commissions at a time to ensure each piece receives the care and attention it deserves. If I feel your furniture isn't suitable, I'll always explain why.

What happens once I book?

A deposit secures your place in my schedule. Fabric choices and details are confirmed before work begins, with the balance due on completion.

Can you store furniture before or after upholstery?

Storage space is limited, so collection and delivery timings are agreed in advance. Extended storage may not always be possible.

Why are lead times longer than expected?

Bespoke upholstery isn't mass-produced. Each piece is worked on by hand, often using traditional techniques, and lead times reflect the time and care required to do the work properly.

What if I change my mind?

As upholstery work is bespoke, changes once work has started may not be possible. I'll always confirm all details clearly before beginning.

Can you help with design decisions?

Yes — I'm very happy to guide you on fabric choices, trims and overall design to ensure the finished piece works beautifully in your space.

Can I supply my own fabric?

Yes, client-supplied fabric is welcome. I'll always check suitability first to make sure it's appropriate for upholstery and for your specific piece of furniture.

How much fabric will I need?

Fabric quantities vary depending on the size of the piece and any pattern repeat. Once I've seen photos and measurements, I'll advise on the exact amount required.

Do you offer sustainable or natural materials?

Where possible, I work with natural and durable materials and can advise on suitable wool, linen and other natural fabric options.

Where are you based?

I'm based in Reading and work with clients across Berkshire, Hampshire, Oxfordshire, Surrey, Wiltshire and West London. Location can affect collection and delivery options, which we'll discuss at the enquiry stage.

Still unsure?

If you're not sure whether your piece or project is right, you're very welcome to get in touch. I'm always happy to offer advice — even if that advice is that upholstery may not be the best option.
