COMMISSION Process

Working with Kate Morris Studio is a collaborative and considered process, designed to be clear, calm, and thoughtful from start to finish. Each project is approached individually, with time given to design decisions, materials, and making.

Initial Enquiry

The process begins with an enquiry via the website or email. We'll ask for a few key details about the piece—its size, condition, history (if known), and how you'd like it to be used. Photographs are always helpful at this stage. This allows us to understand whether the project is a good fit and how best to move forward.

Consultation & Design Direction

For suitable projects, we'll arrange a consultation—either in person or remotely. This is where we discuss the piece in more detail, explore design direction, and talk through fabric options, finishes, and practical considerations. Guidance is offered throughout, balancing expertise with your preferences, to arrive at a considered design approach.

Quotation & Scheduling

Following the consultation, a detailed quotation is provided outlining the scope of work. For most commissions, a 50% deposit is required to secure a place in the studio schedule, with the remaining 50% due on completion. For smaller projects, payment is taken in full upfront. A start date is then agreed, with timelines discussed clearly in advance. Each piece is scheduled to allow the time and attention it deserves.

Making & Upholstery

Once work begins, the piece is carefully stripped back and rebuilt where necessary. This stage may include structural repairs, re-finishing show wood, re-padding, and the considered application of chosen materials. Traditional techniques are used alongside modern methods where appropriate, always with longevity and comfort in mind.

Updates & Communication

We keep communication clear and measured throughout the process. While upholstery is a hands-on, studio-based practice, we're always happy to share progress updates at key stages and answer questions as they arise.

Finishing & Delivery

Final hand-sewn details and finishing touches are completed before delivery or collection is arranged. The remaining balance is due on completion. Each piece leaves the studio ready to be lived with—restored, renewed, and made to last.

Our client process reflects our values: design-led thinking, material integrity, and calm, considered making. From first conversation to final stitch, the aim is a thoughtful experience and a piece of furniture that feels right in both form and function.
