Traditional Re-upholstery

Although traditional re-upholstery is a more labour intensive process, it uses mostly natural materials, it holds it structure and shape and is very long-lasting.

It is perfect for any chair manufactured prior to 1950.

Traditional materials include hessian, webbing, linen, springs, twine, tacks, scrims, coconut fibres and horse (or other animal hair). The techniques include stitching springs to the webbing and rolled edges to create the form of the chair. These techniques and materials have been in use for centuries and stand the test of time.

Modern Re-upholstery

Modern re-upholstery uses techniques that are more straight forward and typically less time intensive than traditional upholstery. The result is a smoother and more manufactured finish.

It is typically applied to any post 1950's/mass produced furniture.

Whist it is often lower cost to complete chair with modern materials when compared with traditional methods, it is worth noting that as the materials are synthetic, they can disintegrate over time, cannot be fully recycled and need to be treated with flame retardant chemicals.

Modern materials include foam fillings, synthetic fibres and staples.
